Would it be a bad idea? Is there any wood that would suit better?
Mahogany

I'm gonna build a guitar (hence all the questioning :p ) so I was thinking of using mahogany. The only problem is, every site I look at recommends mahogany for necks, but never for the body.

Dude Mahogany is the only wood in a body that I will use for metal! it is so heavy and dense it gives such a thick punchy rhythm sound. It's like a mesa boogie amp, that kind of thickness. For necks mahogany is fine and so is maple. It really depends on what kind of sound you want from this guitar.

What sites have you been looking at?
Les Pauls, SG's, Gretsch's, Yamaha Studio Lord, SG & SBG series, Tokai Love Rocks, all have mahogany bodies. Just to name a few.
A lot of mahogany-bodied guitars have a layer of maple on the front to make it look pretty, but the layer is too thin to have any significant effect on the tone. Mahogany is a very good tonewood.

dude, Mahog is the way...Id say 9 out of 10 (sucking figures outta my thumb here, but this is accurate in my experience) set neck guitars are Mahogany bodied, and usually necked as well.
as Lats said...Les Paul, Grestsch...add most Schecter,s all Paul Reed Smiths...Mahog.
another great body wood, if you can afford it is maple, played a custom built Strat (made for Nigel Pulsford of Bush) with a flamed maple body, was so amazing.
and if you can get a rosewood neck, that is also top notch stuff.

Uhuh. It was on The Internet, so it must be true... :p
I wouldn't even recommend taking my word for Gospel. You should routinely check information with as many sources as possible. GT gives you access to a lot of knowledgeable people, so it's a good place to start.

My Carvin Bolt has an ebony fretboard. The body is swamp ash, which i dont think anyone has mentioned. I like the look of the translucent finish on the swamp ash body. yea.
