I would look into Brian May or Marty Friedman. Both are very unique and skilled.

Glen Tipton of JP is one guitar player I've always admired and on the other side Ry Cooder for bluesy. Speaking of Ry, did any of you see the movie Dead Man with Jonny Depp. Ry did all the guitar for that flick and it's way cool.

Try some Frank Marino and Mahogony Rush. This guy has been going strong since the early seventies. His latest CD is awsome!

Try Dave Mason. His Alone Together album is great, especially the long bluesy solo on "Look At You, Look At Me". There are lots of others; all of the guitar on Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album is good as well as the guitar on the Moody Blues Seventh Sojourn album. Robin Trower's Bridge of Sighs album is awesome.

I had a great time learning all of Slash's solos.
Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel.

You can't do much better than listening to early Ritchie Blackmore with Deep Purple and Early Rainbow. You'll hear a variety of scales outside of the major & Minor Pent's eg: Deminished and melodic minor scales and arpegio's. He plays authentic Jazz/Blues to Heavy Metal shred and back to Classical inspired solo's. He also plays in a scale he calls Bulgarian and you will hear an awful lot of this scale played by Ritchie in his Rainbow days. Listen to Gates Of Babylon and you'll get the picture.

Listening to Ritchie didn't do Yngwie Malmsteen any harm did it?

How bout Willy Nelson. I can't say I'm a fan of country music, but I can't deny that he's an excellent player. Or for somebody you've probably never heard of, Joe Richardson - Austin Blues/rock player. I've seen him down on 6th street, and his performance of Voodoo Child was smokin. His website plays a lil tune when you open it.

Woops, how can I forget ole' Billy Gibbons. I just love that guy!

Yep, Santana, absolutely in my book; getting redundent in his old age, but he still comes out with some sweet licks.

Roy Buchanan- reason I bought a Tele
Dickie Betts
Duane Allman
Hendrix, of course
Jeff Beck-amazing tone
Robin Trower- I think he never got the recognition he deserves; sure, he's real derivative of Hedrix, but so's SRV, and lotsa peeps think SRV is god.

these are my picks off the top of my head.

Whoops, you said besides Jimi. So I'll say....Gary Moore. Monster player.

Thanks, Doug. I think Santana is another under-appreciated player. The younger players these days, imo, just look for speed, speed speed. Guess I'm showing my age, lol (47). I just think Santana hits notes in just the right place when you go, AHHHHH!
