In this chapter we're going to start working on some rock soloing chops. Most guitar solos in rock are "improvised", which means they are made up more or less on the spot. The reason I say more or less is that you're not just making music out of nothing; you have a basic vocabulary of notes and combinations to draw from, and then you improvise with that vocabulary.
Think of when you speak your own language; you don't have every sentence planned out ahead of time, you just have a vocabulary of words, sentences and phrases, and then you work it out as you go. That's where you eventually want get in your soloing as well! But it's a journey, and we'll take it one step at a time.
So in this first tutorial we're going to check out the basic major and minor scales and explore what they sound like in a rock context. We'll also practice improvising with each of them. Let's get started!
