In this tutorial, we're going to be putting together many different layers of different tones in order to achieve that thick, 90's alt rock sound.
The 90's were all about using a sort of "sloppiness" that was grungy and fun. It added a certain amount of edginess to the music.
What we had going on in guitar before that, especially in the late 80's, was a culture of practicing and mastering your metronomic precision. It wasn't so much about what you were playing, but whether or not you were playing it well.
Bands like Nirvana came along and introduced the influence of underground punk bands like The Pixies into mainstream rock. This had already been an undercurrent, but Curt Cobain made it heard far and wide on MTV and radio. The influence of alt rock guitar's attitude can now be heard in the "Emo" movement, because those kids grew up listening to bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Weezer, Stone Temple Pilots, The Breeders, Ween, and any other band that could tastefully add some layers and texture to their music without it sounding amateurish.
