I cant even decide what it is. I hear people talking about it.

But then I ask the most technical shredders in the world (Rusty Cooley, Francesco Fareri), and they don't know what I'm talking about. So I'm kind of at a loss here.

Maybe I should email Holdsworth, he is from Mars after all..

I'm confused still.

I've looked at Ron Thal's and Jennifer Batten's playing extensively.

They tap, but where is this 8 finger stuff coming from?

Well, it's a fairly rare form of tapping and more or less a novelty. But, I'd argue there are actually a few guitarists who use it. Adam Fulara and Stanley Jordan both play exclusively 8-finger tapping. However, I think the confusion stems from the myth that 8-finger tapping is used in runs or something...and that's not the case. Most of the 8-finger tapping that I've observed by guitarists such as those I mentioned above follows something like this: One hand taps the melody or solo, while the other hand does walking basslines, chords, etc. It is very rare that both hands would be used in conjunction, however, to pull off 8-fingered legatto-style runs or whatever.

this is chris broderick from Jag Panzer, pretty cool stuff. but rare as it has been said.

i think the tabs are on their homepage if you want to give it a go. just takes a lot of practice

To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense. After three years of playing I tried to play everything as fast as possible and that sounded, I would say, like shit, and I didn't realize that if I'd play bit slower things than I was capable of playing then everything would sound much better.

If ya wanna get into some basics of 8 finger tapping, you can check the later lessons in the link below. I haven't gotten around to Part 5 yet but eventually I'll continue on with more techniques on 8 finger runs and scales.
As far it being rare I'd probably agree, but I don't know if I'd call it a novelty. I've been using it in about half my playing for years now and rely on it as a legitimate playing style just as I would sweeping or any other technique.

All About Tapping: Part 4

This song uses 8 finger tapping in about 50% of it...mostly for runs and sweep-like arpeggios

yeah, i was able to get the first part of the right hand down, it's really hard. but you're right, the hardest part is playing it all together

Ahh, I see what you're talking about.

I play stuff like this all the time, I just do it differently.

If you look at Greg Howe's playing. He sometimes uses more than one finger to tap on with his right hand, but then he just brings his left farther up the fretboard and does it that way.

kewl stuff.

the major problem is definitely the coordination of both hands which is no problem when using the 8-finger or 10-finger tapping for fast legato runs. but when it comes to two independant parts it gets real tricky. i figured that right hand tapping itself - playing melodies and runs with the right hand only - is absolutely not difficult (to me at least). i can play at virtually the same speed as with my left hand. but the hard part is the independency. me is working on some excercises for that purpose. me se gonna post some.

Just an observation:
the left hand generally plays "in position" (unless it's sliding around the neck)e.g 1st finger, 1st fret, 4th finger, 4th fret etc.. A player who moved their left hand around more might use the same finger to play at more than one fret and would not necessarily need to use all their fingers. A player who assigned a finger to a fret would have a greater economy of movement. Is 8 finger tapping just an extension of this principle, the use of a system which requires the coordination of every finger?
Quite a lot of my tapping is of this variety but, since I particularly specialise in 7th arpeggios along the lengths of single strings, it is my 1st and 4th fingers that tend to do the bulk of the work.
If I couldn't laugh at myself how could I laugh at someone less ridiculous?

Well, there are some runs that would require 8 finger tapping, as well as chord-melody solo guitar that would require it, but it's definately not essential to guitar playing, like alternate picking. I mean, look at guitarists you know. Very few use 8 finger tapping and they sitll get a lot done. I would say focus on the basics first before tackling this. Oh, and if you want some coordination practice, practice some basic piano playing - especially some Bach Two Part Inventions to get hand seperation.
