Hi
I recently bought a Fender Champion 20 amp, whilst it's got a lot of effects built in, the metal effect ( distortion ) Doesn't sound that great to me, this is probably the limitations of a budget amp or me being a beginner?

So I was thinking about buying the boss distortion pedal, would this sound better than the in built distortion, or would it only be as good as the amp can play?

TIA

If you want something "metal" the DS-1 isn't your best bet. For a modern metal tone from Boss, I'd recommend you go with the ST-2 Power Stack.

Yeah I'd roll with that or the Boss MD-2. Ideally though, you'd get a good distortion from your amp. The Line 6 Spider series have a nice, modern distorted tone.

Let me know what you decide to go with.

I'm using the metal effect on my amp at the moment, can't make my mind up about a pedal now, used the amp today and it sounded quite good.

Decisions?

What kind of tone are you after? Can you give an example of a song, guitarist or band that has the type of metal tone you want?

In general, any tone starts in your ability to play, then the guitar pickups, then the amp. Pedals are useful tools, but they can only do so much.

That Fender amp is a great beginner amp. I'd strongly encourage you to watch some gear demos vids to see what it possible with that amp.

Notice that he gets some great overdriven tones. But no matter what he does, his playing style & that Strat sound like bluesy classic rock.

Here's a vid with a different player & guitar (more modern style) but the same amp. And in Japanese! :)

Look for vids to hear what's possible with what you have! Hope this helps. Have fun!

Thanks Chris for the reply and links.
Yes you are right, this is a very capable amp by the looks and sounds.

I think it's definitely my ability to get the tone I want, I'll have to put more time and effort in to practice, ( which I'm doing ) and hopefully do the amp justice one day, fingers crossed.

I'll leave the effects pedal then for the time being.

Thanks again.

I had no clue the Champion even had that. I like how you can blend the tone from "British" to "Metal" and not just have two set positions for them. Hmmmm was looking at a Marshall Class 5 but may be rethinking this...
