One of my strats has a nut made of a material I have never seen before. Its not plastic, brass, bone, or graphite, Its totally BLACK! Its a custom shop Fender stratocaster 54 reissue. Has anyone ever heard of this type of nut on these strats? What is it made of?
Thanks.

Hah! I was going to sit this one out!

My guess, and that's all it is, would be Corian. Its usually made to look like marble, but there's no reason it couldn't be one solid colour.

Just a little check. You're SURE it's none of those materials? Never heard of fender using anything particularly strange - it's not jsut coloured plastic or graphite? Corian... I'm way out of my league here.

Thanks for the info, but I dont think its plastic.. its not shiny like a plastic nut would be.. It almost looks like Ebony wood, but wood isnt hard enough to function as a nut is it? I checked out Fender.com to see if there was some info on this guitar but I didnt get much info reguarding the guitar I have. Is there another site I can got to that might have info or a email address that I can get info from? this guitar is all original, I know that much.
thanks

Corian is a synthetic material that is very hard. Stewmac used to sell it in pieces pre-sized for nuts and acoustic bridge saddles. They don't carry that stuff anymore, but they do list something called TUSQ, which might be what you have.

Fender Custom Shop, quote" The traditional Fender nut is compression molded for uniform hardness from surface to center. Custom Shop options include; brass, bone, plastic, graphite,LSR roller and locking nuts." Fender calls their plastic" Cyclovac", which sounds alot to me like injection molded plastic. Oh No you say, Fender Custom Shop wouldn't really use plastic would they? Well just this week I picked up a copy of "Guitarist" magazine, and they compared a Fender Custom Shop Classic Player, a Tom Anderson, and a Don Grosh, and all 3 of these fine high dollar guitars had plastic nuts! Really the key factor is hardness, if that nut isn't plastic, then what is it? the oddity here is that it's black, the vintage reissue type stuff almost always has bone or simulated bone "Cyclovac" nuts. Well you know what they say, If it ain't broke, don't let pstring fool with it!

Cyclovac...I've heard that term before, but I didnt know what it was, thanks. I'm gonna assume thats what it is. Its only black to be consistant with the color of the hardware on the guitar. (All the hardware is black-tuning pegs, bridge, jack plate, screws, even the string tree!..)
Thanks for the info!
