Heavy Metal is all I listen to. I cant stand to listen to anything else. The problem I have though, is that since its never played on the radio, or advertised mainstream at all, there is no way of finding other great bands withought having someone tell you about them or hearing them yourself. So I thought Id make a post to "discover" any bands out there that kick ass but that I never heard of. This is a list of stuff Im in to:

-Megadeth, Children of Bodom (current favorite), Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Iced Earth (just found these guys through a friend recently).
-I like the whole neo-classical stuff like Ynwie, or any other bands that are influenced by it.

Any other suggestions?

I'd suggest trying some "roots" metal as well - Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden etc. If you're into more technical stuff like Megadeth and Iced Earth, you may find that progressive metal (Queensryche, Dream Theatre, Blind Guardian) and alternative/technical metal (Chimaira, Lamb of God, the Dillinger Escape Plan) appeal to you as well. Right now I'm rocking a band called The Number Twelve Looks Like You - interesting, to say the least. But I think you will find that the more you listen to metal, the more you will gain an appreciation of other styles of music. :)
And don't forget Bol!

CW 14 had alot of good bands in his list but he also had alot of bands that arent metal and are metalcore and nu metal which are crappy genres IMO, as I lay dying arent metal slipknot isnt metal, trivium isnt metal, cradle of filth and killswitch arent metal either as well as between the buried and me. But there are alot of good metal bands in that list, nevermore (if you dont mind lots of sweeping) amon amarth is good, then all the classic metal, maiden, sabbath, priest and so on..

Iced earth is a great band, glad to hear that you listen to them. there new stuff is pretty good but the albums with matt barlow are the best

I obviously am a big Black Label Society fan so i definetly suggest them although alot of ppl dislike zakk wylde i think he is an amazing musician

I agree you might want to check out some prog metal like dream theater John Pretucci is a god

i could write a gigantic list but go here http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=292018 that is a great list of metal bands (dont mean to plug another forum its just a great list)

Maybe, but the entire concept of genre theory is subjective anyway. I was only being flippant with my comment about Parkway Drive and Killswitch Engage not being "real" metal, because that's not for me to decide for other people - what's "real" metal to one person, could be punk or industrial or hard rock to another. For instance, I don't think of Parkway Drive as a metal band - and that's fine by CW, because they're metal as far as he's concerned, and that's all that matters. You don't think of Trivium as a metal band, and that's perfectly valid - my opinion differs from yours, but that doesn't mean either of us is wrong. Hell man, if people tell you that the Backstreet Boys are pop, but you're convinced that they're a Brazilian jazz-fusion group, then they're Brazilian jazz-fusion as far as you're concerned! :D
Sorry if I sound like I'm patronising you, BLS :o.

Heavy metal is a form of music characterized by aggressive, driving rhythms and highly amplified distorted guitars, generally with grandiose lyrics and virtuosic instrumentation.Heavy metal is a development of blues, blues rock, rock and prog rock. Its origins lie in the hard rock bands who between 1967 and 1974 took blues and rock and created a hybrid with a heavy, guitar and drums centered sound. ...

- that's from google definitions.

i think what the creater of this thread is looking for is classic metal (which is wat i prefer anyways) the truth is that metal has changed a fair bit as bands have adapted it. It's like for example Metallica's Black album, is that metal or just hard rock? IMO it's more rock then it is metal, because there's a huge diff between that and lightening/justice/masters

lol back street boys!

only trivium song i've been able to get into is gunshot to the head of trepidation, and that, if you ask me, is bloody metal - like it's very metallica inspired, sure the vocals are hardcore but the guitar is metal.

yea it is subjective but there are also some bands that are clearly not what 90% of the population thinks they are

its really the unwinnable argument, metal to one person is not to the other and vice versa, but hey if you like the band who cares what genre they are right
