Description

This is THE standard chord progression in country music, right? It could be said that Nashville was built on G, C and D. However, modern country artists such as Shania Twain and Jo Dee Messina don't play these chords like the older artists. You'll see how the change made is a drastic change from the traditional country style.

In this lesson we take a G, Cadd9 and D major open chord progression, extract power chords from the barre chords and add a little rhythm to get a great Shania-esque riff. The change is drastic. Not only does this riff not feel the same when you switch from open chords to power chords, but it also does not sound the same. It's now beefier and more driven.

It can be said that this borrows more from rock than country. That's part of the feel of modern country music.
