The borders of rock are diffuse, I don't know if A Day In The Life would count? What about Bohemian Rhapsody or Comfortably Numb? Anyway, I'll go with Stairway to Heaven...

I think LaGrange by ZZT. Just try to find somebody who does recognize that riff. Maybe they can't name the song but they know the riff!

Or if I change my criteria a little then I will say Welcome to the Jungle, GnR. It was just what mainstream rock needed at the time.

the computer in my head (which is as powerful as one from the early 80s, at best) says, "too many variables,, can not compute"

Wow, if there was ever an impossible question for me to answer this is THE one. There are some many great songs that I've listened to hundreds (thousands?) of times over the years that still get my heart pumping every time I hear them Right now, off the top of my and in no order other than random thought as I type: Sympathy for The Devil, Rosalita, Baba O'Reilly, She Talks to Angels, Tom Sawyer, Back in Black, Soulshine, Blues Power, Alive (this may actually be it :), Testify
