The borders of rock are diffuse, I don't know if A Day In The Life would count? What about Bohemian Rhapsody or Comfortably Numb? Anyway, I'll go with Stairway to Heaven...

I think LaGrange by ZZT. Just try to find somebody who does recognize that riff. Maybe they can't name the song but they know the riff!

Or if I change my criteria a little then I will say Welcome to the Jungle, GnR. It was just what mainstream rock needed at the time.

the computer in my head (which is as powerful as one from the early 80s, at best) says, "too many variables,, can not compute"

I believe you're talking about Black Betty by the band Ram Jam from 1977. :)

Wow, if there was ever an impossible question for me to answer this is THE one. There are some many great songs that I've listened to hundreds (thousands?) of times over the years that still get my heart pumping every time I hear them Right now, off the top of my and in no order other than random thought as I type: Sympathy for The Devil, Rosalita, Baba O'Reilly, She Talks to Angels, Tom Sawyer, Back in Black, Soulshine, Blues Power, Alive (this may actually be it :), Testify

Machine Gun - Hendrix (Band of Gypsys)
In My Time of Dying (Led Zeppelin)
When the Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin)
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Pink Floyd)
Can't You Hear Me Knockin' (Rolling Stones)
La Villa Strangiato (RUSH)

I notice that my feelings for "best" song/artist are so wide, varied and change over time. I guess it has to do with my mood but I just consistently enjoy anything by the White Stripes, Raconteurs or Dead Weather. Most anything Jack White is involved in.

That is so much of a loaded question...I don't know where to even begin...So many rock artists with music that is so world recognized...it all has to be personal preference. When I think of a rock song that stands out when all I want to listen to is what I believe to be unmistakable rock and roll... my hat goes off to "In the Heat of the Night" by Whitesnake which, I believe, epitomizes what rock is....Arena shows and super dynamics...not to mention blistering guitar riffs and undeniable rock rhythms. Just my 50 yr old two cents.

There are so many great tunes, literally thousands.....

My fav is (Don't Fear) The Reaper. Great opening riff, well structured, complete modal change in the fantastic bridge solo, and deep lyrics. Possibly the most haunting song to ever make the top 10.

The cowbell could have been a little louder in the mix.

the best songs of all, are by the airborne toxic event...and they are all great but specifically, innocence, all at once, the kids are ready/wedding day

talk about well structured, and deep lyrics and energy, these are really awesome. the b/w video of innocence with the string section is a must see (you tube)

This will always be subjective. However, if popularity is a factor, a well known song should be selected. My votes go to Pink Floyd's "Another brick in the Wall" and Lynyrd Skynyd's "Sweet Home Alabama".
