One of the questions we get asked the most is, "how long does it take to learn the guitar?" While there isn't a straight answer, there is a better answer than 'everyone learns at a different pace' (though they do!).

Here's the short answer - you can easily learn a few chords and start playing full songs within weeks or even days. The great thing about popular songs or standard chord progressions, like Blues progressions, is once you learn a handful of chords you'll be able to play hundreds of songs. If you are looking to become more of a proficient player or even a soloist, you should set your sights more long term.

Are you wanting to get good at fingerstyle guitar? Do you have aspirations to take ripping solos? Trying to learn Jazz? These techniques and styles will require not only a good amount of hours in the practice room, but also practice over a long period of time. These concepts can become more clear as you spend longer time with them.

We want to hear from you! Where are you at on your guitar journey? How long has it taken you to learn the guitar? At what point can you say you "know" the guitar? Is it entirely up to the individual? Or are there some basic skills needed to be able to claim that you have learned the guitar?

Great post.

I'm walking along on my journey! A few more steps everyday.

The challenge for me personally, is accepting that I just can't learn at the pace I would like to. Not from lack of effort, but from basic lack of talent. But that is fine. I walk the journey at my own pace.

Amen William! Walking that very same path. I am four years in and finally starting see my ability to tackle songs I have really wanted learn that are intermediate in difficulty. But, it’s taken a lot of dedication to slowly work my way through Anders rock lessons and resist the urge to move on before I have it under my fingers. Not easy!

I started on GT about 18 months ago after 24 months on Fender Play and I can honestly say I have learned way more on GT. I wish I had more natural talent but I am grateful for the opportunity to grind it out. As Anders said a while back, you only have two choices quit or keep going. The answer is obvious.

Long Live Rock!

That's right, the question 'How long does it take to learn guitar?' always makes many people wonder. Actually, the speed of learning depends on each person. I've been learning guitar for 2 years and am still honing my skills. Every day is a new and exciting learning journey.
