I don't think it would be anything even close to that...

Well I mean honestly we're not trying to deny or argue the fact that other bands other than Zep have plagerized, or debate one version's popularity over another's. We could honestly go on for months discussing the countless pieces of plagerized music. And atleast speaking for myself I am in no way shape or form attacking or discrediting the artistic ability or success of Zep, but I do not condone the way Zeppelin, or and other band for that matters, use of another artists piece of music with out giving credit where it is due.

I'm just trying to speak for the many of musicians whose music been taken and used without consent, compensation, or atleast a formal verbal acknowledgement. I mean honestly I just think it's the right thing to do. Maybe I'm way off in left field here but hey everyone has there own opinion right :o

Pat Boone? Really? Somehow I just can't imagine Pat Boone whipping through a smokin' version of 'Sweet Home Chicago' but I might enjoy that. OH THE IRONY OF IT ALL!

Alright i wasn't going to wiegh in on this but...ah wha tthe heck...I recently saw the Yardbirds. Jimmy Page used to be with the Yardbirds as i'm sure you all know. The Yardbirds did the song "Train Kept A Rollin'". As they introduced the song they made a point of the fact that Page took the song from them. OK, i did very little research on that song and aparently Aerosmith did that song too. And Guns & Roses. Heres the interesting part. It wasn't the Yardbirds song in the first place. In 1956, Johnny Burnette and the Rock ā€™nā€™ Roll Trio released that song with slightly different lyrics and i'm not even sure his was original. So the question comes down to who plaigerized who.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"You Shook Me" is a blues song written by Willie Dixon and J. B. Lenoir. Earl Hooker first recorded it as an instrumental which was then overdubbed with vocals by Muddy Waters in 1962. It was later recorded by various rock musicians, including Jeff Beck on his album Truth, and most famously by Led Zeppelin on their debut album. Who plaigerized who. Willie Dixon didn't sue Muddy Waters for using his song but since Zep used it and made it world-famous Willie sued them and won.

I say if you want a good collection of Zeppelin, go for The Best of Led Zeppelin, Early and Latter Days. Two cds with their best.

Maybe because Muddy Waters credited Willie Dixon?

Maybe they had an off-the-books agreement?

Either way, there is a HUGE difference between covering a song with the understanding that somebody else wrote it vs. claiming that the song is your own original work.

IT'S NOT PLAGIARISM IF THEY CREDIT THE SOURCE! Sure tons of people COVERED old blues songs but they CREDITED the SOURCE, which isn't plagiarism! Led Zeppelin just blatently stole a song and credited themselves with WRITING the song.

Should we make an equally big deal that Vanilla Ice used the main riff from "Under Pressure" by Queen and David Bowie as his backing track for "Ice, Ice, Baby"???

Didn't they sue him for not giving them credit for it?

They tried but the courts ruled it out after Ice claimed his had one extra note...................................... If Spirit was so distraught about it, you'd think they'd try to sue also... but apparently people on forums are the only ones that really care...

Actually, it was settled out of court, ie: "give us $X and we won't to through the expense of raping you to the full extent of the law."

How do we know they didn't try?

One thing to consider is that Copyright laws are much stricter now than they were 30 or 40 years ago; Spirt may have approached a lawyer, made their case and have been told "we're never gonna win this."

Add in that about 75% of all "news" to cross the editor's desk gets cut from the final broadcast or printing and that media reporting is already very selective and finicky, there's just no way to know.

Zeppelin definitely should have credited the folk they stole from, but I still find it funny that blues guys are calling plagiarism on them. I mean, the blues. I hope they find out someday who originated the phrase "Done gone lost my woman" and sue every blues man ever.
