Is it good to learn them??? :)

And my guitar teaher showed me Ionian mode last week, is that mean I can expect the rest of the mode family in the future lessons???

Just a curiousity. He told me the benefits. But does it make the difference?

Oh and...

What's key anyway??? All this theory stuff is confusing. Say if you play the Ionian mode .. start with A does that make the Major in A???? I'm in a hole

Any links you know that has great written theory lessons, please do share :D

Yeah they are good to learn. When someone refers to the Ionian mode, they mean the major scale. Which is the most beneficial thing you'll ever learn on guitar. You'll probably learn the minor (Aeolian) next, then harmonic minor and melodic minor before you learn the other modes. Depends on the teacher, but that is usually the order. The more scales you know and the better you understand them, the more riffs and stuff you'll be able to create.

A key is the root of a song. Say a song is in C major, that means the songs is relatively circled around the note C. And it just sounds major cause of the chords that the song is made up of. Yeah if you play the Ionian starting on A, A is major. Here's the chords that exist in that scale/mode.

A major / B minor / C# minor / D major / E major / F# minor/ G# diminished.

I think the biggest benefit of learning modes, is you can really change how a song sounds and how it feels.

Right on tele master, I saw some clips made by a guitar player. He was getting a normal version of songs I like and added his touch, and the addition was just awesome. Heavy shredding to melodic riffs this guy had it down.

Looking at that guy's profile, he went to music school instead of normal high school. So I think this guy knows his stuff back to front that's got to do with theory. This guy's solo writing styles really blew me away.

Main reason for me to take a new look at theory, because I've neglected theory till now :)

The guy that made my jaw drop was just an average Korean guy (I'm korean). He made recording of himself playing songs from X-Japan ("The" famous rock band in Asia from Japan, they play mainly heavy metal). He got one of the songs by X and added his touches.

I can post the link if you want. Could be average stuff for you Notice :) you seem like a knowledgable guy with theory. I just think that guy also knows alot of theory too and thats how he writes his own stuff.

Thanx. :) But yeah post the link, I would like to check it out, and maybe someone else browsing though might be interested. Since you are very interesting in theory and it seems to be only average stuff for a knowledgable guy. The best advice I could give you (and this might sound corny but..) is you should always be willing to learn, especially with music. Don't be the older person who doesn't listen to the younger person cause he/she may not have had the amount of experiences you had. Even a 100 yr old man can learn from a 5 yr old. I may know alot about modes but someone like you meantioned might may have picked up on something (maybe just tricks, and whatever) I haven't thought of. So it's always good to be interested in learning from others no matter how much you think you know or how much more advanced you are. Knowledge doesn't speak to a closed mind, and as humans none of us know everything.

Well nothing like a good modest teacher who is willing to teach willing students. Was working all day today, a commercial shoot scene in a nightclub, and I was able to chat to an exprienced audio engineer there. Told me a lot of good stuff about how to achieve different sounds with EQs, and so forth. :D

and the link for that korean dude I was on about, little background on the clip/song, song is called Weekend by X-Japan (The Godfathers of asian rockers). I was taken by how this guy written and added parts into the orignial.

Could be your average cup of tea, but to me this guy really made me cry, j/k :) haha someday I'll pull out chops like that and satisfy myself. People say speed ain't everything, but if it does it for me, then hey... that's where I wanna be :)
