oh, didn't see this post before...
I've been into system of a down since "sugar" came out as a single, thier first album is fanatastic and i really recommend it for those who dont get thier new stuff...
THe singing has greatly improved, and the guitaring is little more angular, except on tracks l;ike choped suey, which sound like a track the record lable had a hand in "appropritising" for the mainstream (but i think they get thier revenge by putting "bounce" on the album, who would have thought "pukka pukka pukka pukka..." would sound so good :D), but still a great album.. Lyrically thier still on form, with "deer dance" possibly being the best, or possibly "toxicity"... Very good album, but it sounds more glossy than the first, but then again the first does sound like a demo at some points...
But to be completly honest, I've no idea how they've beomce popular, they used to a very cool band that only i knew abotu in my area... oh well, it's good that they've gained some sucess..
I would definetly recomend them, as a cool alternative to all those metal bands that sadly are in the same old rutt.

Edit: oh yeah, I'm still pissed off about Pappa roach ripping off SOAD's song "spiders", which is a biutiful and strangley spiritual song (but back then Serj wasn't as vocally ambitious as he is now)...

Ive only actually heard "Chop Suey" and thought it kinda sucked. Alot of people have been tellin me they are good but after hearing that I wasnt sure. One guy keeps going on about how great the drummer is, and hes abbout 7 foot so Im not gonna tell him to shutup. Is the drummer that good?

The band's solid.

I'm not too into them, but the fact of the matter is they're in time with eachother, they're original, and they're definately NOT slouches on their instruments.

I think Rask's summed it up (although I personally do quite like the band) They can all play their instruments (I've watched Daron (guitarist) play over at guitar.com (%$$^Ā£!...ahem!) and he definately can play. A lot of their music has wierd (well, wierd to westen music) time signitures, 7/4 or 18/12 or really crazy stuff like that...so, not only can the drummer play in these, but play in time...I reckon he's a pretty good drummer, yea...
Also, I have it on good authority that they great live - gotta gain points for any band...
Just my two pence worth...
Don't worry too much about me, ignore me long enough and I'll go away.

lol, thier time signatures are "odd", only cos it's not that widely use in westrn music, but to be honest they've nicked it from armenian folk songs etc
The drummer is great...
Led Zeplin: Pffffft, that's possibly thier most pop sound, and doesn't really gel too well... have a listen to:
-"Forest" - "War" -"Spiders" -"Toxicity" - "Sweet pee" and something like "Know", but definetly make sure you listen to "deer dance".

Didn't notice this thread until now, as I rarely frequent this thread, but I'm quite a fan of System of a Down. The first time I heard toxicity I thought "what is this metal sh*t?" but the more I listened the more I htought, well it has something aobut it. It's very operatic music, and songs like Chop Suey have a bit more to them than most songs of that genre. They're too heavy for me to listen to them that often, but when I'm in the mood...

System of a Down is a great band. It took me a little bit to start liking them, but I got into it pretty fast.

Well, since you dragged up this old thread, I'll have to say that SOAD has been growing on me. After you've heard it 70 times, that Toxicity song isn't that bad. And that one song that they stole/redid from Pink Floyd, Us and Them is really cool. Anyone know what it's called?

No, I didn't know they redid a Pink Floyd song. I have both cds, I'll figure out which one it is.

This is what you do to never miss a thread(and I think what you mean is that you rarely frequent this forum) again. When you go to the homepage and click on forum, and the forum loads,go to the bottom and log in there where there's that "not cookied?" thing. After that,it will show you the last time you visited(that's actually the last time you logged in),the time it is now,and a link to "view new posts".If you click on this link,it will do a search and bring up links to any thread that has recieved new posts since you last visited. From any discussion gropu, open to gear.
I thought a whole mod should know this.
How did you become one?;)

Well, I don't know if they consciously redid the song, but the vocals and the melody sound the same in some places.

Sorry...its "pogo" as in pogo stick. Listen to the whole of the song and it makes a lot more sense.

SOAD is a good band. But it usually takes awhile for people to start liking their songs. When I first heard Chop Suey I absolutly despised it, but now its a decent song. As for the talent in the band, I think the drummer is excellent and as for the guitar player, he's not a "great" guitar player, but he is an awesome composer (i guess thats the word) He can put together great songs with the guitar, including many riffs in each song, going from clean to heavy, slow to fast, he's really great. But my favorite song by them is Ariels. Its a realy phat song.
