I am a new player and want to get the heavy distortion sound like Metallica, Pantera, Megadeth, Slayer. Can anyone help? I have been told Boss Metal Zone is good. But eveyone has their own favorites. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks Chris

hey,

i had the same problem a while ago. But I found the Ibanez Smash Box. This little badass kicks out some crunch, smash, any kind of distortion you want. It can go from semi dirty to "in your face" dirty. I reccommend to test one of these babies out next time you are at a music shop, and tell me what you think. (it sounds heaviest if you turn your mids down and lows way up!!)

Keep Rockin!

You might want to try a MXR Distorion+. It doesnt have alot of controls but has a wide range of authentic sounds. Just try out as many as you can find and let your ears decide.

You are not going to be entirely satisfied with your sound if you just get an effects pedal but don't ahve an amp that is capable of those heavy sounds. While something like a Metal Zone is good, it's not going to make you sound like Megadeth. As you can see here: http://home.iprimus.com.au/mccormac/equipments.html bands like Metallica and Megadeth rely on powerful amps; noatably Mesa Boogies and Marshalls (two brands you will see crop up in this area) rather than effects boxes. This is not particularly practical for home playing - though note the use of power attenuators that can help keep the volume down -, but I am merely warning you that although effects can sound cool, you're not going to sound like you might want without spending a hell of a lot of money and having a massive area in which to play.

Yea, i have a mxr distortion + and it is the best! you get that nice fat crunchy sound, that 80's metal sound. i used to have a dod grunge but it was CRAP. I plugged it in and its hissing was so loud. But you should still go to the store and try out some tho, because everybody has their own preferences in equipment.

I think Barsely is correct. I'm pretty sure some of those are primarily Mesa Boogie sounds
