Hmm well this is a tough one, but I enjoy mostly metal and I disagree with all of the comments about Hetfield. He has a perfect voice that fits perfectly with the sound of Metallica. He doesn't have just one sound, he can sing without the growling (e.g., fade to black, nothing else matters, unforgiven). So here's my list.

1)James Hetfield (duh!)
2)Mike Patton (faith no more)
3)Phil Anselmo (Pantera)
4)Ozzy
5)Chester and Mike (Linkin Park)
6)Maynard (Tool, Perfect Circle)
7)Danzig

That's about it. Those were in no particular order :)

1.Scott Weiland(stp)
2.Lenny Kravitz(himself)
3.James Hetfield(Metallica)
4.Brandon Boyd(incubus)
5.Wayne Stanley(Alice in Chains)
6.Chris Cornell(Soundgarden)
7.(Doors)
8.Aaron Lewis(Staind)
9.Scott Stapp(Creed)
10.Dave Mathews(His Band)

Well, I think its safe to say thaqt with today's music (especially the new rock bands) the emphasis is particulary on their sound, (because half the time they can't carry a note to save their lives), but still there are some good new singers today, Maynard James Keenan, Thom York, and even Scott Stapp (he really surprised me when he performed with The Doors.) With the 80's music, you guys can make fun all you wan't, but alot of those bands really had some powerful singers, and most of the time they never missed a note, today you can get away with so much,.

When it comes to my all time favorite singers I have to include Robert Plant (he has such an amazing voice that several musicians have tried to emulate but to no avail, this guy can sing at any level.) Chris Cornell, this guy sings from the heart, and with the release of his solo record he proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he can do more than just scream. Paul McCartney and John Lennon, these guys are amazing musicians and their voices expressed their true emotions, everytime I put on a beatle's record even after a hard days work their overall arrangments always get to me. Others, Jim Morrison, Eric Clapton, Kurt Cobain, Don Dokken, David Coverdale, James Hetfield , the list goes on and on and on.

When it comes to female vocalists, there are so many from the past and I could go on for hours. But with the musicians of today, listen to PJ Harvey, she is amazing, and she iusn't tied down to just one style. I think ewha I love about her is that shes very impulsive. And Alanis Morrissette, shes very good...

-Joseph, :). Ohh, and OZZY OZZY OZZY...

1. Bob Dylan. All those who say he can't sing don't understand..... or maybe they do, and don't really like the fact that he can't sing. However, despite the fact that he can't sing, he is the greatest singer ever, and if that makes sense I am lucky.
2. Bono. In my mind, the greates singer today, a powerful, emotion filled voice, and he can actully sing in a manner of speaking.
3. Jimi Hendrix. I agree with whoever said that people don't talk like he did anymore. "People call girls groupies and they call people hippies and blah blah woof woof, it's cuase they're f*ckin, not in love man".
4. Eddie Vedder. Another powerful and emotive voice that I think is the best thing about Pearl Jam.
5. Jim Morrison.
6. Neil Finn. Previously of Crowded house, now solo. I think it is the New Zealand accent that does it.
7. Tom Jones. Hehehe, I just had to put him in, oh also...
8. Barry White: The god of love "Ooooh Baby". LOL

male picks:
Roy Orbison: you wanna talk about range?!
David Clayton Thomas (Blood, Sweat, and Tears): pipes! My gawd, such pipes!

male pans:
Geddy Lee (Rush): he sounds like he spent his childhood in a high-helium environment.
Bruce Springsteen: a fitting heir to Bob Dylan, another brilliant poet who couldn't carry a tune if you put a handle on it.

female picks:
Sarah Vaughn: her voice kinda curls up in your ears and makes you feel warm all over; you gotta hear her to believe it!
Janis Joplin: I don't like people who scream their lyrics, but this woman made us all feel her pain.

female pans:
Marlo Timmins (Cowboy Junkies): she threatens a lot of notes, but never actually hits any!
Mariah Carey: all t(h)rilling technique, and no soul at all.

BruNOT the heir to Bob Dylan. He was once called the new Bob Dylan, until everyone realised how glib such a comparison was. At one point Donovan was also seen as the new Bob Dylan by some people, it doesn't really work if the original outlasts the heir does it.

In my opinion Ronnie James Dio (Black Sabbath, Rainbow) is the best metal singer ever! If you have heard Heaven & Hell by Sabbath you will know what i mean. Ialso really like Bruce "Air Raid Siren" Dickinson (Iron Maiden). If you have heard either of these two you will note that high range and lots of vibrato is what i like in vocals :p. However, Hetfield, Mercury and Guilmour are good too. Did Waters really sing Hey You? I could swear Dave sang all Floyd songs...

In no particular order :

*Ronnie James Dio - I think he has the most powerful voice in metal/rock. Listen the Stargazer from Rainbow Rising album. he is awesome.
*Geddy Lee - The first time I heard him was on Rush's debut album. I could not stand him at the time. I took some time, but i grew to love that voice.
And others...
*Ozzy
*Freddy Mercury
*Robert Plant
*John Lennon
*Dennis De Young (Styx)
*Some guy from Kansas (Carry on wayward son, Steve Walsh?)

Not from me.
While Nate King Cole is not "my cup of tea", I think he had a very good voice. Same with Billy Joel.
