I've just bought an electric guitar and
I realise the low E string is in tune (according to my cheap tuner) when its pucked open but if I hold it down on say 3rd fret (so its a G) it will be out of tune by a fair bit becoming a G#
Does anyone know is that happening?

Thanks !

After testing with a more accurate meter
its more like a 20% tune
So ringing open it is a perfect E
on first fret it is a F with 20% more towards the F#
on second fret it is a F# with 20% more towards the G

And so is the other strings....

I'm really worried.....

Sounds like your guitar might need a general set up and, in particularly, that the nut slots are too high. If you can, take it to where you bought it and get a set up. For free, hopefully. If you can't do that for some reason, then take it to a reputable musical instrument shop or luthier near you.
...so ever since then, I always hang on to the buckle.

Yep and have them set the intonation.

The 3rd fret or some of those in that area might be slightly sharp. Not every fret will be perfectly in tune. The important one is to make sure the 12th fret and the open string are in tune. If the 12th fret is flat, you need to move the saddle forward to shorten the string and raise the pitch. If it is sharp, move it back to lengthen the string and lower the pitch (Pretty sure I got that right, but those directions always confuse me haha). That is what is known as setting the intonation.

The reason you look at the 12th is because it is the octave of the open string. So your 6th string is E open and the 12th fret is also E. You want those 2 pitches to match, but like I said, the other frets won't be perfectly in tune always.

But that doesn't mean that they should be WAY out of tune. If the open and 12th match, but you still have overly sharp notes, take it to a luthier and see what he says. You might have other things to deal with then.

Congrats! This is interesting because your Strat seems to suffer from the same problem mine did (I have a Highway 1 SSS). After fixing up the nut slots, all those lower-register intonation issues went away. It's possible to have perfect intonation at the 12'th and still have a bad nut that makes open chording sound so bad it's not worth playing.

I'm taking my guitar down to the local guitar store to get them set them up.
I'm also getting a bit of fret buzz from the low E string, so the action might be a bit too low.
Hope they wont hit me a big bill for it :)

I'm back from the local store and they said the guitar is perfectly in tune and everything is already well setup....
So I guess my iphone tuner is not working too well......maybe its time to get a real one.

I also picked up the iRIG from them and downloaded the app onto my ipad.
I havent tried any real stomp box but this sounds pretty good to me :D
I've spent the past 3 hrs playing around with all the effects.
Now my finger hurts while typing this post....
