I'm American... but my guess is they're probably "Football" teams... or Rugy... either way... and no, I'm not watching. But I find it very intersting to view the amount of excitement the World Cup produces around the world as opposed to the lack of excitement here in the United States... I always liked soccer.... I mean Football...

As long as we're talking about soccer/football I will agree with you on that. The Netherlands can beat the US... I don't know much about International Football though.

Haha, no Green and Mundine are aussie boxers! Anthony Mundine is an ex Rugby League player who moved over to boxing and I think nearly everyone in australia wanted to see him go down in this fight! Turns out he won

HAHA! Oh! Well then, boxing is something I know a little bit about. Recently though, I've been getting a lot more into Ultimate Fighting... It's much more entertaining and it's much more fun to watch.

Football makes far more sense as a name for the game anyway. Soccer? What the hell is that? Is it supposed to mean you should sock 'er? And why is the sport we Americans/Canadians call football called football? The foot barely comes into contact with the ball!

I think in North America, soccer be called football and football should be called "Bone Crunch Fun Time Extravaganza."

When American Football was created... a field goal was worth 6 points and a touchdown was only worth 3 points... So the main goal of the game was to get the ball in position to kick it (with your foot) through the uprights.... Since in all reality, kicking an oblonge ball 50 yards between a ~10 yard wide upright is pretty difficult! Then teams began to hire specialists who could easily kick it through everytime... So, they converted the scoring to 6 points for a touchdown and 3 points for a field goal. There you go... in a hutshell the origin of American Football... and why it is called what it is called. Maybe a canadian can explain why hockey is called hockey......... because THAT I don't understand...

I would disagree... but it would just cause an argument... alls I can say is... if you've never played American Football at a competitive level, you have no idea... I've played rugby many times on Purdue campus with a few Aussies that are there for engineering... I still think US Football is way more painful... Next time you get a free moment... blind fold your self and put ear plugs in....stand in your front yard... tell a friend to run at full speed and tackle you... but tell him not to let you know putting his shoulder directly into your side.I guarantee that heā€™ll get whatā€™s called a stinger in his shoulder (a severe muscle cramp) and youā€™ll get your bell rung too. Youā€™ll both be soar for a few daysā€¦. If you do it right. Thatā€™s just one play that happens often in US Footballā€¦ that simulates a Quarterback sitting back in the pocket looking for a wide receiver when a 6ā€™7ā€ 280 lb defensive end comes running at full speed and hits him when heā€™s looking the other directionā€¦ and because of the noise of the crowdā€¦ he canā€™t hear him comingā€¦ US Football in no way is for sissysā€¦. Rugby is cool though. I find that I still prefer US footballā€¦ the rules are all messed up in rugbyā€¦ and I donā€™t like scrummingā€¦

I'm with Akira...soccer is football, but football is not soccer...if you get what I'm saying! Football is the correct name I say!

that said, who is watching the Barcelona Arsenal game tonight?
I'll be off to watch it in a second...I believe it starts in 25 min.

I would like Arsenal to win, but my prediction in a 3-1 Barca win. what you guys think?

by the way, Akira, and any other non-American (or American football fans) which team do you support?

I myself support Liverpool...but dont you call me scouse

I agree with the whole name thing as well... it should be standardized... haha. But I don't really support any specific club. I like Ronaldinho a lot though, that guy is amazing!! I hate Beckham..... he's too mainstream. The girls go wild for him... he's a good ball player... but I'm not a fan.

Here's my best shot at it. I imagine a scenario something like this, way back in the early days of the sport:

Player #1: Hey Gord! Didja see that shot I made?
Player #2: Yeah! Good stuff, eh?
Player #1: Yeah! Right fer his five-hole!
Player #2: That Moosejaw goalie stopped it like a hawk, eh?
Player #1: That's what we should call the game!

And then over time, I guess the pronunciation evolved into "hockey."

I didn't get to watch Green vs. Mundine, but I certainly heard people talking about it. Sounds like "the Man" was just way too quick for him - but I think that if Green had ever managed to trap him in a corner, the tide would've turned very quickly.

AND... I already explained in a previous post why we call our Football... Football... and your Football... Soccer.... But yeah, we're the only country that calls it anything but Football... Oh well... leave it to us Americans to be different from everyone else...
