While i know a dynamic mic is probably best, im stuck with large diaphragm condensor for a 4 x 12" guitar cab...any words of caution or tips to get the best combination from this akward combination of eqiupment? Will the condensor mic be ruined due to its fragilness?
WWSD? What would stevie do?

Check out the specs for the mic. Most condensor mics can take quite some abuse.

LDCs are much more sensitive than dynamics like sm57s. The down side of this is that it is easy to blow the capsule at high volumes (SPL).

Just turn down a bit and don't have the mic up on the grill and you will probably be OK. If it is a really nice mic then find some one who has an SPL meter, they are not expensive.

you are quite right many LDCs will have a pad for attenuating input, a bass roll off for proximity effect and a polar pattern switch.

The polar patten is important as it dictates how much ambiance (think verb) you pick up.
