Description

In this lesson we'll explore what I think is the second most common right hand accessory after the regular flat pick. This is called a thumb pick, and even if it doesn't end up becoming your main thing, you should know how it works.

So here's a basic version of a thumb pick. It may seem strange that the pick is kinda sticking out sideways like this, but once you hold your hand in place over the strings, you notice that the angle is perfect.

This gives you all the benefits of hybrid picking, but without having to use the 2nd and 3rd finger because your 1st finger is holding the pick. The 3rd finger is notoriously difficult to get under control, and this way many people avoid ever having to worry too much about that.

Some people then grip their like it's a flat pick and use it to play single note lines. This has never seemed natural to me, but I see people do it with great results.

Now let's try out our Travis Picking Pattern with the thumb pick over a simple backing track. Notice how you get the great articulated bass notes that we also explored with the hybrid picking, but without the awkwardness of having to rely on our 3rd finger.
