One of the wisest lessons that we can learn here is how to be a support player within a song. We don't always want to be up front and stealing the attention from the lead singer.
During the intro, play it loud and proud. Show off.
Then when the verse comes in, you've gotta simplify, get down into the first position, and play simple chords. Let the singer take over. Then when the chord comes in, it's time to start strumming hard again.
If the song didn't follow this pattern of loud and soft to some degree, it would lose its energy, turning into one, boring, endless pattern. The rock wouldn't be as rockin', would it? This is how we achieve contrast and keep from sounding like an amateur.
