I'm a bit unclear on this. What exactly is it that makes a guitarist technical? Is it just speed or is there something else involved? From what I've gathered it's just a fancy way of saying someone's fast, but I could be wrong.

noo! technical does not equal fast! i am a fast player but i am very non technicl mainly relying on good old penti, one or two other scales an mine ears, just cos iv learnt to play it fast doesnt make me technical. a good technical guitarist will use combinations of diferent scales and notes not usually sticking to one key, ie when theres a possibility of using a diferent key over a certain chord will use that to distinguish the voicing of that chord. thats te kind of thing a truely technical guitarist would do, but thats my opinion other ppl would think that a guitarist who can shred all over a song staying in the same key, using no original voicings etc. would be technical cos they use technical stlyes, ie sweeps or tapping.

Well, it actually makes me feel better knowing there's more to the term than just speed. If there's anything else to it please let me know.

No man, technical does mean speed. Everybody only knows one scale and everybody plays it super fast. There's different ways to play this scale but all in all it's still the same scale. No matter what people say, all they do is take one or seven different patterns of the same scale and play it to death and call themselves technical. Yeah we all apply theory to our guitar playing, SURE.

a technical musician is someone who mainly focusses on his technique rather than on everything else. these dudes are known for their ability to play the most difficult stuff flawlessly.
its the technical aspect of playing. finger movenemt.

a theoretical musician is someone who focusses mainly on music theory and makes it his holy grail. everything they write is perfectly bound to music theory and he´ll be able to dissect every work by any composer and tell you exaclty whats going on. they analyze every frigging chord. a common problem among those players is, that alot of them lack the ability to improvise spontaneously over any given progression by just trusting their ear - simply because they never concerned themselves with it.

a good musician is a (more or less) technical player who has (not necessarily) some basic knowledge of music theory but refuses to comply himself to anything but his ear and heart.

You want a good example of a technical guitarist?

Eric Johnson

Everything he plays must be played flawlessly or he won't play it. Every note must ring true. Every note must have the right tone. Everything must be perfect... Try just sticking to the top two things yourself and it just might drive you nucking futs...
So. If you throw a cat out of a car window, is it considered "kitty litter"?

hmm, that sounds a bit like me !
By virtue of their electrical properties, tubes generate a special waveform when they're saturated, which is why tube engineering has tremendous tonal advantages over solid state or DSP solutions, particularly for crunch and lead sounds. Tubes enter the saturation zone gradually or softly, which lends tube-driven tone its trademark yet totally unique character.
