Either by your picking hand's side of thumb , or by not lifting your fretting finger totally of the string (keep it slightly touching the string to mute it).
BTW , it's not necessary but it's better if you can play a given lick with as many picking patterns as you can do , just as an exercise ... Try not using legato at all , and pick all the notes starting with a downstroke at the g-14's as an example.
