I'm learning a bunch of Christmas songs at the moment. I'm gonna play for my family at our Christmas party, which will be like 50-70 people, easily the biggest crowd I've ever played in front of.
Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel.

Currently working on picking sextuplets at 100 (which I can't yet do because I suck at alternate picking; I'm at 90 {9 nps} right now, with a goal of 120 {12 nps} in the long run.)

Also working on fluidly alternating between 8th note triplets and 16th notes in passages like Eric Johnson style - harder than it counds!

Also still working on sweeping and it's application in improvisation/composition.

Finally working on dynamics in improvisation, such as the use of pinch harmonics, pick attack, and volume control.
"You must stab him in the heart with the Bone Saber of Zumacalis... well, you could stab him in the head or the lungs, too... and the saber, it probably doesn't have to be bone, just anything sharp lying around the house... you could poke him with a pillow and kill him."

just working a lot on my picking and rhythm
To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense. After three years of playing I tried to play everything as fast as possible and that sounded, I would say, like shit, and I didn't realize that if I'd play bit slower things than I was capable of playing then everything would sound much better.

I quickly learnt In Joy And Sorrow (acoustic) by HIM last night. Not hard or anything, but a nice sounding picking piece during the verses.

And besides that I'm quickly relearning Aubrey By Bread because I forgot how a bit of it goes and it's a nice song anyway.

Working on getting my pinky finger up to speed and getting fluent again using the pinky with my old riffs. Also, alternate picking (goes hand in hand with working on the pinky finger).

I am working on trying to find musicians to play my sh*t. It almost seems either North Central Florida has dried up of talent, or they are already in bands... Go figure.

Hey The Dirt, drop me an email with your addy and I will send you a "little helper" to help with your alternate picking... The Stylus Pick. I just picked up a whole bunch of them CHEAP on ebay...
So. If you throw a cat out of a car window, is it considered "kitty litter"?

The best way to alternate pick is with the heaviest possible pick. This is what I've observed from my own experience and from watching other incredibly fast guitarists. The heavier the pick, the more 'attack' it has, and subsequently, the less effort required. Those special picks that are flexible in the middle (like Dava Control) are just novelty and will only get you into bad picking habits, especially if you go back and forth between pick brands and types.

What I'm learning right now? How to procrastinate late at night before a f'n final exam at 8 am. :(

Best picks for speed must be not to thick but flexible. I agree the most the thin picks the are flexible suck for speed but i go for th medium thickness picks that are solid and wont flex. I find the really thick ones are to big and atually make it harder!
By virtue of their electrical properties, tubes generate a special waveform when they're saturated, which is why tube engineering has tremendous tonal advantages over solid state or DSP solutions, particularly for crunch and lead sounds. Tubes enter the saturation zone gradually or softly, which lends tube-driven tone its trademark yet totally unique character.

You know what I've found about picks (like so many other people)? It doesn't really matter. Just whatevers comfortable for you.

True enough. But in my opinion, 1.2 - 1.6 is the ideal thickness. Like someone else mentioned, if the pick is too thick (ie 2.0), then it can become hard to alternate pick efficiently. Ideally, the pick shouldn't be too thin or too thick. That's my opinion.

I'm not too nervous about it. I still got 11 days :). Plus no one in my family aside from my immediate family even knows I play. So I'm sure it'll be easy to impress them. Hell, switching fluidly between 3 open cowboy chords oughtta do the trick :D

it works like this...

use a .13 or smaller string, a metal pick, and start tuning sharp...

use a cheap guitar because this messes with the intonation.

once you reach about G# on some octave or another, keep tuning up and hack at it with the pick near the bridge. make sure the neck is pointed 30 degrees wide of the insect of choice... the aiming is a bit tricky.

eventually it snaps, takes off into the general direction of the unfortunate bug, and if you're lucky, slices right through it.

i have yet to master this.

it sounds better as a one-liner.

I'm learning all Dashboard Confessional song right, reall easy. My teacher is teaching me this gay hippy song "Here Comes the Sun", because I thought it sounded cool. I was also sick of all this difficult blues stuff we were doing. Its nice to have a break.
