Im gonna say a couple of well known amps and you guys tell me what comes to mind in terms of sound:

i.e.

Marshall: Clear harsh tone
Vox: blues fuzzy tone
Fender: crystal cleans
Matchless: expensive...
Mesa-boogie dual rect: metal
Crate: cheap
Peavy: hairbands from the eighties

I know there are many variations of these models but i wish to know what you guys think about the trade mark sounds or general characteristics of these amps

The Vox and Matchless are the only ones that even come close to my Ampegs. But not close enough.

Marshall: great crunchy tone and blues tone but not super high gain
Vox: dont know
Fender: glassy clean channels with killer blues tones
Matchless:
Mesa-boogie dual rect: metal metal metal!!!
Crate: good at making solid state amps I am auctually kind of fond of the glx series and the blue voodoos are not that bad
Peavy: mostly metal amps and rock They have some nice models the 5150 and 5150 2 which eddie van halen designed, alot of metal bands use 5150's that are modded and the xxx series is nice to.

Marshall: Awesome. I love the tone of these amps. Wonderful quality of sound.

Vox: Haven't heard much from them...

Fender: Similar to the Marshall, I don't like it as much though.

Matchless: not as much as it would like to think.

Mesa-boogie dual rect: Bah

Crate: Wonderful amps. I really like the larger half stacks and full stacks that come out of this company.

Peavy: I own a really really awful Peavey, So I'd like to say all their amps suck. But that's really not the case. I think Peavey makes some pretty good amps, but I really like the fender and Marshall amps better.

VOX : amazing 60's and blues sounds

FENDER : Great clean, not so hot on the distortion though

MARSHALL : Great for classic rock distortion and alot of new age rock distortion too. I'm not a fan of the clean channel though

Marshall: classic rock. Heavy
Vox: Never played one, only thing I can think of is that ad with nickelback, lol
Fender: Best clean there is, awful distortion, awful!
Matchless: Never heard of it
Mesa Boogie: To $$ for me, umm heavy modern rock, king of amps, I also think PRS.
Crate: Solid State, I kinda like the GLXl, but I wouldn't buy one.
Peavy: Cheap Crap.

Marshall: Great distortion. Blows you away. Expensive.
Fender: Great clean tone
Matchless: no idea
Mesa-boogie dual rect: The best heavy metal-amp.
Crate: no idea
Peavy: Great tubes.

Fender- clean/blues. I've heard them used more for blues.
Crate- can be used well, but I would rather invest in a randall.
Mesa- Nofx uses them, so I don't think it's the best limiting them to metal.
Randall- rocks
Marshall- most commonly used by tone-deaf knob-crankers, but can sound very nice when used right.
Peavey- I've played one peavy amp and it was great for jazz. Past that I have no idea.

By virtue of their electrical properties, tubes generate a special waveform when they're saturated, which is why tube engineering has tremendous tonal advantages over solid state or DSP solutions, particularly for crunch and lead sounds. Tubes enter the saturation zone gradually or softly, which lends tube-driven tone its trademark yet totally unique character.

I saw engl stack at this show. The head on it looked so cool. Lots of buttons and lights :)
