I saw some guitar players in live clips, where they grab (or bar the strings not to sure) the top part of the neck with their picking hand and then do some intense legato runs with the left. The curiousity is.. why do they grab the top the neck with the right hand?

Is this real or just some little showmanship to trick people into thinking "Holy *&^% what did he just do?" If its real what's the point in doing that stunt?
