It occurred to me once that it was odd that Malmsteem hadn't been on a G3, I thought maybe even Satch was too scared! Personally Satch is my favourite (best player of all time in my opinion) but Malmsteems's sweeping and wide fast vibratos could put the fear of God into the bravest of players. Wish I could afford to see it..
I don't know why Satch never plays "Why" live, it has maybe his best solo in it.
I saw Satch play with Ulli Jon Roth and Michael Schenker. They all kicked ass but Satch was my fave. The highpoint for me might have been Stu. Hamm's Bass solo spot, I don't get why it is that some idiots boo him. There are a lot of people out there with lobotomy scars...
If I couldn't laugh at myself how could I laugh at someone less ridiculous?

Impressive ... I've never imagined that Malmsteen could agree on being #3 on something !

Joke for you.

A guitarist dies and goes to Heaven. St Peter shows him around. First he takes him to Jimi Hendrix's room. The great man is out on show but Peter's sure he won't mind him playing around on his Strat if he doesn't break a string. Then Peter takes him to Vai's room and he's slightly amused by the wallpaper with "ME ME ME " written all over it etc. fiddles around with his Jem 7.
Then the guy asks him where Malmsteem is and St. Peter tells him "Sorry mate, bad news.. He went the other way".
But later that night he hears this searing Harmonic Minor Run and some massive sweeps and thinks "That's gotta be Malmsteem". He asks St. Peter about it the next day and he says "Shhh... don't tell God, he thinks he's Malmsteem!"

lol good one

Malmsteen working with 2 other virtuosos on the same stage.....start laying your bets on how long it will be before he throws a tantrum and walks out on the tour....credit to him if he lasts and doesnt try to steal the show...will be interesting. I'd rather have seen Eric Johnson as #3 but i'm still getting tickets :)

Actually, I think that's gonna be the bast G3 to date.

In the 70s, Al di Meola, Paco de Lucia, and John Mc Laughlin weren't the best friends, nor were they the easiest guys to live with.
I think they are going to try and outplay each other... YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!

Pettrucci'd be good. Not very G3 but maybe Stanley Jordan or Allan Holdsworth. They're both horrifyingly technical players.

Oh my god, Allan Holdsworth would kick their poor asses! Satch and Vai aren't able to play over Allan's tunes!!! :)

Howd'ya know? It's not just any guitar player who can write a song in enigmatic major and play part of it with a slide on his right hand!

Well, if you'd ever heard the bootleg of Allan's gig at GIT with Ed Van Halen, you would know too!
Allan's harmony is way beyond Satch's and Vai's... I'm not saying they suck, but compared to Allan, he could blow them away with his simplest tune...

Woohoo! Looks like I'm driving 3000 miles for another concert!

My only real problem with this, is that Satch and Vai really haven't progressed much technically since they were first popular. Yngwie on the other hand is still getting better and better every day. Check out his newest album Attack! or his guest spot on Derek Sherinian's album Black Utopia). In fact Yngwie's first track on Black Utopia is just as fast, technically impressive as the slightly newer guys like Rusty Cooley or Francesco Fareri. I just think he's going to tear them apart.

He improves technically but not song writing wise. He didn't take much of a risk after Rising Force,(except that concerto in Eb minor) But then again,it should be about the writing, I think. And who knows how much Satch and Vai has improved. Can't always judge by whats on record, ya know?

I think that several of SAtch's best are on his earlier albums anyway, Memories from not of his earth, Crushing Day, Lords of Karma, Echo, Midnight (surfing), etc. I'm not that keen on his last two albums but Crystal Planet had some great music on it. Maybe The Extremist was his peak for me (like the solo on Why!) and Flying.. was patchy but contains some of his best playing. There's only so far anyone can advance, I think the G3 guys are near their playing limits unless they start playing 2 guitars or stick or improvise in weird freaky scales or something.

Well I've seen both Satch and Vai live..

So unlesss they were taking it easy that day, technically they're still very far behind Malmsteen.
