Hey Mike, did they put some Who songs back on the site that they had previously removed?

Hey Jamboss - what a nice surprise.  Yes, it looks like they are back on the site with a new license agreement. I'm not sure if there are any others.

That’s great news Mike. Slays another myth…..”lessons lost due to copyright agreement expiry, never come back”!

I don’t want to get my hopes up too much, but any chance your great Skynard lessons might return one day? I note Primary Wave Music has acquired some new publishing rights……..

Moreover, I think I've read articles that The Who is (was?) one of the artists most reticent in licensing their stuff.

Would love to see the Skynyrd back of course! As I don't have any knowledge of the business side of GuitarTricks, we can only speculate. But certainly the re-emergence of The Who tutorials gives hope that things are progressing behind the scenes in a positive way. I do hope we can get more of those lost songs back.

Cheers!

Hey John, that is indeed very interesting! The entire music publishing industry is in a state of flux right now, with all sorts of splits and deals that make the whole process of licensing songs very complex. It is a bit surprising that agreements were renewed with the rights holders of The Who catalog, but perhaps those songs now require very little in the way of clearance.

Cheers!

@jamboss1 - thanks for letting us know.  I haven't had much to smile about recently but this put a smile on my face

Also a big thank you to the Admin Team at GT for getting back some old classics.  Is there a way to let members know when new/returning songs are available?  Where should we look to get this info?

Great idea! I think it would be a real winner for the community.

Thanks for the suggestion - I'll pass that along to admin. It would be great to know which songs came back and if any more are in the pipeline.

Umm, I think the only Who song lessons that were removed were the two versions of "I Can't Explain", and those remain unavailable. The list of songs that were removed are in this spreadsheet provided by Ben Martin: Song Removal Spreadsheet

You can see in there that those were the only two Who song lessons removed, so unfortunately, I don't think we've actually seen any come back.

Songs have been removed throughout the years.  That long list referenced was at least the third time I can recall although the previous purges weren't as large.  Perhaps Who songs were removed earlier... I dunno.

I can confirm that those Who songs were removed earlier than the latest big purge, and now have come back.

Well then, that is great news! I was aware of one smaller previous purge, but didn't go back to see if they were removed in that one.
