Are "tweed" amps just really old tube amps, or are they a certain type of tube?

Tweed amps are vintage Fender amps made from the 50's through the early 60's. "Tweed" comes from the material the cabinets were covered with.

Here's a great site about vintage Fender amps.

When someone says the "tweed sound", they're referring to the sound you would get using a tweed amp. Often means the '59 Bassman, which is the circuit Jim Marshall copied for his line of amps.
