help guys. need expert opinion on how to do sweeps w/tapping. i saw this video of michael angelo (speed kills?) and it helped me a lot, i can do some of the sweeps in it but im still having trouble with those where he adds tapping. i saw him do a sweep w/ his right hand already at the neck then doing taps here and there. i have no idea how he does muting and the tapping really slows me down. any tips on what/what not to do? i really wanna get this thing right :)

Getting your picking hand near the fret where you're gonna tap helps , but it can alter the tone if you go down the neck.

Use your picking hand's palm with help from your fretting hand.

I just ordered that Michael Angelo Speed kills DVD instructional last week. (Can't wait) Should be here in 1.5 weeks or so :-)
I started learning guitar because of Randy Rhoads..but Yngwie J. Malmsteen is my biggest influence.

Speak of the Devil! My DVD arrived today ::-) Kick-butt...way faster than I expected.

I'll give a detaled description in a few days. What little I have watched so far (had to go to work) it kicks major butt. (Better than all of my instructional videos)

Well I'm off to change my strings (Broke it last night while jamming to the songs in the jam section of this web site)...then to practice some of the video, then some more jamming, then some recording.

well, i tried the right hand palm muting, it works but it sounds kinda weird. do i apply the same pressure like when im muting it from the bridge? will it improve with practice?

i played around a bit on some muting techniques and i came up with something that i thought would help clean up my sweeping. i tried sweeping without palm muting, just fretting (well, not really) the string just above the desired fret but not letting it touch the frets, kinda like a harmonics thing. it sounded like **** on an acoustic guitar but was pretty decent on heavy distortion. i still dunno if this is the proper way to sweep?

You should not mute the notes you're playing like aiwass said , only unplayed strings should be muted to make one note sound at a time , however you can mute them all on purpose if desired.

Muting techniques are very complicated to explain or even to watch (I drool when I look at my playing to analyze my muting technique ;) ) , but it's very easy practically & should come very natural and without having to work your mind very hard , sometime you'll find your fretting hand doing the muting job exclusively , other times you'll need help from your picking hand ... I'll try to summerize the muting thing for you :

A) Fretting hand muting :
=========================
1) Thumb : For Lower strings (basicaly lower E string)
2) Laying your fingers on higher pitched strings.
3) Touching the Lower (in pitch) adjacent string with a fretting finger.
4) Using your index finger to lay on all strings (specificaly lower one's) , while normaly playing with other fingers ... ( This one isn't for sweeping in general , but I think it might help)

B) Picking Hand muting :
========================
1) Palm : As you normaly Palm Mute , but you should also try to use this to ONLY mute UNPLAYED strings.
2) Free fingers : If you hold your pick between index and thumb , you'll have three fingers free for muting purposes.

I also recomend to practice sweeps with clean tone first to make sure you're not messing at any point and that everything is clear , then take care of the muting with little distortion and increase distortion gradualy till your can sweep clearly with a DeathMetal tone.

Hi all.
I have read that MikeP. got the new Speed Kills.
I got the first Speed Kills and I know that Michael describes string muting (with the fretting hand) in the new DVD. It seems to me (at least in fast alternate picking) that he doesn't mute with his right hand.
PLEASE MikeP. can you describe his technique? He says the same things SLY wrote about muting techniques?
And what are other things he talks about in the new section of the video?
I ask you because I can't order the DVD.
Thanks.
