Ive heard EVH uses symmetrical scales, but does he do this in standard tuning? When i get home from uni Im gona tune one of my guitars open G for a few songs Id like to learn. I cant visualise it the now but is there a tuning that leaves you with a uniform pattern across all the strings? does open G do this?

for a uniform pattern all across the strings you need a perfect fourths tuning throughout - for example:

E A D G C F

I mean where the parttern would look something like this..

1---12-----14----15----17---
2---12-----14----15----17---
3---12-----14----15----17---
4---12-----14----15----17---
5---12-----14----15----17---
6---12-----14----15----17---

Is that open G tuning?

Yeah, eddie plays those symetrical fingerings in standard tuning, like aiwass said, certian notes will sound out of key and create tension. Most of these runs will be played very fast so that the tension note aren't left to ring out.

Eddie also likes to change up the order of the patterns. So for ex on the ist str. he may play 12 14 15 12 14/ 2nd str.12 15 14 12 15
