I heard somewhere, if you wanna pick fast you gotta hold it and pick so that only the tip/small part of your pick touches the strings. This will reduce resistance blah blah blah... all that physics. Anyhow is this the truth about picking fast? Any tips on improving picking???

My main problem is picking whilst changing strings, I can hack away linear runs, but I get hammered while doing scalar runs :( HELP FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!!!!!!!!!

have to agree with the killah.. I still can't shred for sh*t and to be honest.. don't want to. the best piece of advice I can give you is "practice doesn't make perfect. PERFECT practice makes perfect".

Start slowly and clearly. Make sure you can hear each note as you play it and with time you'll set the fretboard on fire. It took a while to get that point thru my head but it works very very well.....

I'm a sucker for big time shredding songs. I do take guitar passinonately and hope one day I could also play like that. I read about "stylus" picks few days ago and thought will that make a bit of difference, I can do 16th at 116bpm so far... I've been in this rut for ages, but I am improving slowly.

I wish someone here wrote an encyclopedia on "How to shred for dummies" :) A step by step guide with all the essentials, cos really I've got either of the same licks and not many variety in my routines.

I no longer use a pick for cross-picking as I prefer to user a thumb-pick and 3 fingers in a Chet Atkins-stylee. I find this a lot more versatile although it takes a fair bit of practice to get right. Alternatively, there's the pick and fingers approach used by Albert Lee which makes for high-speed crosspicking. This is where the pick is held between thumb and index finger with the other fingers doing arpeggio runs etc. I recommend his 'Star Licks' vid tutor which shows him using this technique on 'Country Boy'. You may not like country stuff but the technique is flawless.

I saw a short clip of that albert lee video on the beginning of one of my other star lickz video's, it was pretty amazing.

Well I'm cool with all genres but I'll give finger picking a go later :)
