I was talking to a fellow axe player today and he said that he considered Jimmy Page a better songwriter than guitar player. For example(he used this) the solo to Stairway To Heaven is very simple, but it fits perfectly. Personally I thought that was a real good argument. Wjhat do you guys/girls think? Songwriter or Guitar Player?

I put Jimmy Page in the same catergory as Hendrix, as in at the time they broke the rules of how the play and blasted open many new genres. But if they were doing there thing now and someone else had done the breakin the rules, I don't think they would be considered as such legends. But Page has written some timeless songs like the aformentioned Stairway, every guitar player knows that song. Dazed n Confused, Whole Lotta Love, Kashmire (been ripped off so many times even by Rage Against the Machine), Black Dog, the list could go on. So I would say songwriter

I would definitly say both. Man he kicks a$$ on Song Remains The Same video, playn´ some really cool stuff and fast too. I think during that time period his technique was absolutly world class and I don´t think that there were many famous guitar players that could beat him.

When it comes to songwritning, o my god. Words aren´t enough. Jimi, Sabbath, Purple and Zeppelin were the most important bands in rock music and I always liked Zepp most.

Comunication Breakdown, Dazed And Confused (song remains the same verision), Wholla Lota Love, Heartbreaker (shred), Thank You, Stairway To Heaven, Black Dog, Song Remains The Same, Rain Song, Achilles Last Stand, Kashmir, Imigrant Song.... i could go on and on. All this songs are just perfect and none of these "big 4" had such a huge musical talent as Page/Plant had.

What I like about him is that he is extremely versatile musician. He has gone through all the stages of rock music. Many people blame him for not playing cleanly but I don't give a damn about such things. He is both a great guitarplayer and songwriter.

From what I know, Jimmy Page wrote most of Led Zepplin's songs, lyrics and guitar. If thats true than hes pretty damn good.

I used to find his electric playing a bit muddy. I think he was a far better acoustic player though, III being my personal fave.
