Harmonica and Guitars
I recently recieved a harmonica as a gift. Too bad for me I don't know how to play it, but I am keen on learning. It is in the key of "A" and has the numbers 1 to 10 on the "mouthpiece". So how do I figure out what number is what note. Do I follow the A Major scale or A Minor scale? Can I use my guitar theory to find out the notes? Or because its in the key of "A", does it just mean that the #1 is an "A" note?

I don't know how to play a harmonica , but Music Theory is applied on any instrument , scales and stuff like that never changes. ;)

Major scale, usually you'll find the root ("A") at the 4th BLOW hole. Each hole is two notes (BLOW & DRAW). So the 4th hole is blow A, Draw B. 5th is blow C#, draw D, 6th is blow E, draw F#. 7th hole changes to DRAW G#, BLOW A. Wish I had my harp here to confirm this, but I'm pretty sure this is how it goes.
You'll also need to use a technique called "tongue blocking". Done properly, you'll sound only 1 note at a time. Essentially, your mouth will cover 4 holes. Use your tongue to block the 3 holes on the left, so sound only comes out of the unblocked hole. Will take some time to perfect. Then there's the draw / blow technique and some other techniques a real harp player could elaborate on. This will get you started though.

John,by blow and draw, you mean this hole makes this note when you blow into it,but makes this other note when you draw air thro' it?
Just confirming.I want to learn this thing, and you seem to know wussup. Is there a plce on the web I can go to you know of?(I know I could also go to goggle and type harmonica lessons, but hey,it's better to be told by some who knows the thing about a site that someone recommends).

Yep, each hole is two notes, blow out (blow) breathe in (draw). Don't know of any harmonica sites (never really looked for one). Maybe some blues site may have something ( also check "harp" ). There should be some lesson somewhere on the tongue- block technique ( I learned that from the little "instruction" sheet that came with my Marine band in "C"). though the proper breathing techniques ( blow , blow ,draw , blow, draw, draw etc. ) would really be more helpful. I've got the tongue block thing down, and know where and how the notes sound, but that breathing thing seems to be the key IMHO.
