How does counting off/counting in/leading in work?

[br]I don't have a good feel for figuring out the tempo of a song unless it's stated and on top of that, there seem to be variations in how it's done.

[br]i.e. One / Two / One Two / One Two Three Four.

[br]Also, if a song has a pick up note on say count Four, is there a way that's reflected or is that pre-discussed with the band?

[br]Thanks!

It's done in a few ways. But you have the right idea. The most important thing is to discuss it ahead of time with your bandmates.

But that's exactly one reason a count in is used: to establish tempo! Count in at the tempo of the song!

Sure, that's why it's important to get clear on it before the first count in happens. :)

Yes, always discuss this upfront. And pickup notes are another use for count ins! You start counting on one, then enter on four.

Hope that helps! Please ask more if necessary!
