Ive noticed that with guns n roses, almost all the solos with fast runs up the strings include all the 12th frets and all the 15th frets. Ive never seen all the 13ths and all the 16ths!! wots going on? surely slash doesnt play the same scale for every solo?

I rememeber reading in total guitar a guide to the 3 chord trick and the key it would be in, is there keys that are simply unpopular?

Uh ya . . . those old 80's rocker dudes basically just played in E minor.

Some keys are just easier to play on the guitar. For D, A, and E you can play the ol' 1-4-5 progression in first position with a lot of open strings and stuff.

So what are the chances of Em fitting in to rock songs? 50 - 50? is that good place to start?

The Keys of E & A are the most used keys in Rock, or in guitar music generaly.

Em scale will fit in an Em progression, if it's not E, then it might be A,G or D ... just the same patterns.

If it's E, then you'll find it going from 12 to 15 , or 0 to 3 fretts
A you'll find it going from 7 to 8 , or 17 to 20
G from 3 ot 6 ,or 15 to 18
D from 10 to 13

These ain't the rules, but it's a good starting point.
