What kind of teacher? I generally think that getting lessons from jazz teachers is the safest way to go, (unless you want to play classical) because in terms of knowing overall theory and technique, its a safer bet than with a rock teacher (not saying anything about the music, just an observation from teachers/players I've met.) It really depends on the teacher what kind of stuff you'll learn, might start you off with some scales, some open chords if you dont know them, start giving you theory knowledge.
