lessons
I am going to get my first lesson in a few weeks because I am not going anywhere and in a hurry. What should I expect my first lesson? I have about 2 months expierence and been playing for 5 months.

i had my first lesson not long ago. it depends on what you already know about the guitar. when i went in the first time i already knew the main chords and stuff so i started learning that fingerstyle.

What kind of teacher? I generally think that getting lessons from jazz teachers is the safest way to go, (unless you want to play classical) because in terms of knowing overall theory and technique, its a safer bet than with a rock teacher (not saying anything about the music, just an observation from teachers/players I've met.) It really depends on the teacher what kind of stuff you'll learn, might start you off with some scales, some open chords if you dont know them, start giving you theory knowledge.

When i had my first lesson i had not played guitar before, and i soon learnt how to read and play notes, but when i changed teachers to a jazz style guitar teacher i excelled alot faster. My first teacher was good up untill a point, and i can only tell you that if anytime you feel like you not learning anything new from a lesson it's time to change teachers.
Good luck

I definately learned a lot more when I took lessons from a Jazz player rather than my first teacher who mainly stuck to rock.

Tell your teacher that you want to learn how to teach yourself. I know a lot of guys who make easy money just stringing kids along teaching them some licks from the tabs in the guitar mags. I'm not saying that learning songs and licks is a waste of time but you don't need them to teach you what you could get at the supermarket checkout line. Learn your theory and reading skills, etc...

Yeah bofs right. Reading is something that you develop a lot better with a teacher. Sight reading IS important, if you want to be a musician, or even if you want to get together and jam with friends, it helps so much to know the language of music.
Also, learning songs, you can do it on your own. It's things like reading, theory, improvisation, excercises, that you are more likely to get better at if you have a teacher.
