All the shredders known to man! heh, or at least the ones you know about. I want to get familiar with many different players and their styles. Thanks

Yngwie Malmsteen
Jason Becker
Marty Friedman
Chris Impelliteri
John Jaunese
Michael Angelo
Vivian Campbell
John Petrucci (at times)
Randy Rhoads
Uli Jon Roth

there are many others but these are the ones off the top of my head

To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense. After three years of playing I tried to play everything as fast as possible and that sounded, I would say, like shit, and I didn't realize that if I'd play bit slower things than I was capable of playing then everything would sound much better.

you sicko lal...;)

can you tell them all apart just by hearing them too?

btw what does george bells sound like - someone said he was cleanest and fastesat or some crap...how good is he compared to the stratosphere of Paus, Gilbert, Yngwie, of course Lane and the rest?

also, give me your top 10 or top 20 guitarists ever, not in any category (they will be fast tho wont they? :))

It's just a 'copy and paste' from http://www.ronthal.com links. :)

Some of them have quite a personal sound, so that you can tell them apart. Steve MORSE, with his real fast vibrato, is one of them Satch's long legato lines are a trademark etc. Of course, it's rather hard to really have a personality in the 'shred' department, unless you write some catchy tunes, because the 'up and down the scales/arpeggios' wears off pretty fast.

If I had to make a top ten, it would be (at this precise moment, subject to change any minute)

Allan HOLDSWORTH

Ron THAL

Django REINDHART

BB King

Dany GATTON

Mark KNOPFLER

Al Di MEOLA

Jim HALL

Stevie Ray VAUGHAN

Steve VAI

Hmm, ninja turtles perhaps. Come on, that is way to easy for a guy who used to be obsessed with that franchise.

And shredding is playing extremely fast licks. Such as malmsteen, vai, and the like.

lol... yes, I used to like them :) Saw the first two movies in the theater (of course they were REALLY big when I was in grade school).

Thanks for the answer... it'll be a long time before I even think about wanting to try shredding ;)

A term, "chops" used by jazz cats refer to someone who can really play his instrument in a virtuosic way. Like in 'he has some chops', meaning 'he smokes' or 'he can play well'
A shredder is the rock version of the guys with chops.

Shredding is a kind of music, mostly intrumental guitar, where the guys play out of this world solos.
Let's say that if you like to fast forward to a solo in a song, you are a good client for shred, for shredders think songs are the boring part between solos :p

ps: for anyone who might think I hate shred/shredding/shredders, have a listen there: http://www.lalimace.com and also, what is wrong with my description, I think it's rather accurate :)

Well, if I recall right, the theme was a bunch of guys singing in a choir-like way... Quite hard to reproduce...
