This site and forum are just wonderful and I wanted to offer a general "Thank You" for the overall support I've received here.

Over the last year, I feel like I've started coming out as a musician...and you guys (both forum members and guitar tricks instructors) have really helped me do that.

Your positive feedback on my jam that I posted in the Listening Post gave me the courage to enroll in a rock band at a local music school. Today, I held an impromptu performance of "Blackbird" on a workmate's guitar in my office which was met by general applause much to my surprise. I didn't realize everybody was here and listening. Probably a good thing because I'm sure I would have come down with a case of nerves!

It's an incredible journey...

You're welcome Jon. With the format of instruction here, there's the disadvantage for you that you don't get to personally witness the progress your students make. Just my little way of trying to give back to you guys. And yes, it's paying off tremendously for me.

markm - thanks for listening and commenting on my blues jam. Taking a look over there, I'm shocked by how many listens and views it has gotten. This motivates me to keep going and continue to improve, it really does.

That's great! You are welcome & thank you.

Have fun playing in the band. Congrats on your impromptu performance. Being able to rise to the occasion on those kind of unplanned moments are wonderful. :)

Keeping playing guitar!

Thanks ThorfinnFrisken!! I can't tell you how much that means to me. I still cringe though when I think of some of the clangers in there.

When things settle down with the band, I'll have to sit down and put together something more polished since everybody seems to enjoy it so much. I've been working with that backing track to expand out of the pentatonic scale a bit.

On the Blues Jam in B minor you have the opportunity to step out of the pentatonic box at :19 when it moves to the iv chord (E minor). Use the minor 6th of the B minor scale at this point (G), because that is a chord tone of the chord happening at that moment.

Also at :33 when it goes to the v chord (F# minor) use the 2nd of the B minor scale (C#). You still use the pentatonic minor box as a visual reference guide. But practice seeing, planning & using the diatonic minor notes inside & around the pentatonic box.

I cover this approach in depth in this tutorial on improvising in a minor key.

Hope this helps! Have fun!
