I started to learn at the ripe age of 55. I will be 64 soon, after teaching myself and trying online lessons with other teachers including going to a teacher, I found GT. Clear precise and to the point with Lisa. Now on GF2 which is great! I don't know about the rest of you ahem "old Folks" like me but I intent to play like a rock star.

You are never too old! My oldest student is 72 and he only started 6 months ago!

Hey, i started when I was 51 and followed Lisa through the basics and now I am able to put chords together and am loving the guitar. It's been about a year now and, like many of you, I wish I had stuck with it years ago. Just take the time to practice and it gets soooooo much easier!!

You are not too old in my opinion. I bought my first guitar at age 59. I figure I'll never be a "superstar" player, but I'm learning guitar for my own enjoyment and the fun of it. It's very satisfying to see how far I've progressed with the beginners lessons in GuitarTricks in comparison to where I was at before I joined. So keep on working at it and have fun with the guitar!

I was just asking myself last week.. Am I too old to learn guitar now? I'm "only" 36 years old lol
So I decided NO I'm not too old, ordered a Ibanez AC240, recieved it on Friday, Signed up to this site for 1 year and started learning with Lisa.
Reading this thread has comfirmed you are never too old to learn the guitar :)

If you have 2 hands, ability to learn and hear... you might stand a chance... I've been tinkering around with guitars since the 1960's but never took lessons really until this month. I'm having a ball at 60+ years old...

Definitely never too old! And now with advanced technology and Web sites like GuitarTricks to make it more convenient to take lessons, even us 'more mature' folks ;-) can learn at our own pace!

I will be 53 in two weeks and just this past Fri bought my 1st guitar after agonizing over playing guitar for most of my life. Have always wanted to, but never have. Have basically never touched a guitar unless I was somewhere where the was one was lying around and nobody was looking.
So I really love that jangly sound of the early Beatles, the Byrds, Dylan, Petty and I went out and bought a brand new Rickenbacker 330 (Fireglo of course). It kicks ass! Too bad I don't! ;-)
Anyway, as with anything worthwhile, it's gonna take some time and lots of practice. Will let you know how it goes!

I'm in the UK, (near Birmingham), and I'm 58. I think the only thing that really matters with me, is to believe wholeheartedly that I can iindeed do this.

If you're too old, Keith, something is really wrong with me. After a 40+ year hiatas, I started again last year at 75.

We sure have a lot of youngsters here. And you're asking if you're too old. I just started taking lessons about 6 weeks ago and I'm 86 years old--and I'm' going to learn to play the guitar. There is a young fella teaching me and he says that I'm doing very well. So if I can do it so can the rest of you. You are never too old so just don't give up. The day I was 65 my granddaughter was over and she said, "Well grandpa how does it fell to ge age 65?" I said," to tell you the truth I feel exactly like I did yesterday and yesterday I was only 64". So it proves that age doesn't make any difference." :-) So don't let your age get in the way.

I turn 56 in June and have just started, too. I have always dreamed of learning to play, but with 9 kids to raise, there was never any time for ME. Child #8 leaves for college this fall (a music performance major!) and #9 is a sophomore in high school. The other little birds have left the nest--Thank Goodness! I absolutely think I've earned the right to do whatever the heck I want! Sure, there are some persistent aches and pains when I get out of bed in the morning, and my bikini days are well behind me, but there's nothing wrong with my mind. I have the luxury of unlimited free time to practice, the financial stability to purchase a killer guitar far beyond my current capabilities, and the wisdom to know that I can overcome whatever challenges life throws my way. Because I have. I am really delighted to discover that there are other mature "free spirits" out there taking on this new adventure, too. Best wishes for our mutual success!
