I've written in some other site that Eddie has 20 licks, and he strings them together to make his solos.
But come on, if you listen back to Jimi (sorry if I hurt anybody's fellings) but hey, what's the big deal nowadays?
Well, those guys were landmarks. There was a before and a after Jimi, and a before and after Van halen. Why aren't you (or I for instance) impressed by their playing anymore? Because everybody and their grandma now plays licks that Van Halen and Jimi have contributed to the world of electric guitar, you might not have noticed, but many stuff you play on your axe maybe wouldn't exist if Eddie or Jimi hadn't worked on his...

I remember hearing Eruption about 2-3 weeks before the first VH album came out, no one even understood what was going on with those guitar licks then, you can say what you want about EVH, but he really broke new ground in 1978 and changed the way people played and sounded, he certainly pushed the envelope of what rock guitar was and is today, I still think the first VH album is one of the best rock albums of all time and even though everybody knows all the licks, it still has one of the best guitar tones ever recorded. I know alot of people tried to deify EVH, but they do that with everybody and as far as I'm concerned every hot shot rock player thats come out in the past 20 years needs to send old EVH a thank you card because in one way or another he influenced their style or sound

I read or saw an interview were Eddie said
and I quote(I hated the sound of the first two
albums the way they panned my guitar to one side
added reverb and bounced it back for that delay
effect I hated that sound.)But he alone reinvented
the guitar with his playing style.

He said that because one of his car speaker was blown, and all he could hear was the reverb!

It means you have the normal sound on the left, and ONLY the reverb on the right (stereo only allowing 2 sides)

was done that way in the mix. so it produced a delay
type of effect on his guitar. I guess after the guitar
with reverb was miked and recorded it was then panned
to other side for stereo. But it produced fraction
delay. you know off by a little.(panning=left channel
or right channel).

the guy's a great songwriter (well, before he gave up bubble gum crap with 'love' every other word, incidentally, it's around the same period he first switched singers)
