In the subject of improvisation, is it best to break the scale down in sections before taking it all on at once? i mean full fretboard scales.

For me, I learned the basic scales and then would try and find notes in different places as I needed to. Probably not the best way to go about things, but it's made me pretty mobile. Right now I don't have to think too much about what scale I'm playing, only the key.
