Hey guys,
How important is it to know the location of the notes on the fretboard? Currently I can "work out" what note it is after 5 seconds of thinking but I don't "know" what note it is. If you asked me to play a B on the D string, it would take me some time to find it. Is it important I learn these? If so what are some of the best methods for learning them?

Cheers,
Mark

It really depend what you play and what you want achieve with the guitar.
Anyway learning all the notes doesn't have any side effect. Start playing the G major scale on the low E string and think the note you are playing (g a b and so on). After a while you will know all the notes on the low e than do another scale on the A string and so on. There are theoretical explanations of the freatboard but memory will work too.

My humble opinion. I think it's somewhat important to learn it over time. It helps when you're trying to find other places to play scales on the fretboard. Also good for improv.

Now, having said that. I'm no genius at knowing all the notes myself. I definitely need to dedicate more time to memorizing them.
