I am picking back up the guitar, singing, (never stopped song writing) after a serious head injury. I am slowly learning how to play decent again despite my lack of fine motor skills. One of my problems is that I was left with screaming tinnitus and I am having a hard time staying on key. I have tried to just "work hard" through it but I am making little progress. I have hit the scales and voice coach lessons and it has helped a bit. I am considering some of the online programs out there and they seem expensive and vauge. Has anybody found programs that work, are worth investing in? I go in and out of key and it is very frustrating. I'm not gonna quit and I know part of my voice is still there, I just need to get it under control, and find some kind of new style. Anybody gone through this, know somebody that did, have any insights, reccomendations or suggestions?

As a person with a hearing deficiency, I would suggest going to a hearing specialist.. I believe they can do something about your tinnitus..
According to my ear guy the brain sets up a memory of sound vibration input.. The memory can be restored if the brain can recieve the souniids lost.. or totally lost if repair measures aren't taken.
I don't know how relative this info may be in youe case, but i may help decide on a reseach direction..
hopefully you don't end up with hearing aids.. they are a pain in the butt..
Good Luck

I have no experience on the tinnitus side of things, but I can recommend an online source for singing instruction. Check out the Singing Success program, and especially the Singing Success Online channel. The online channel actually had a few episodes that dealt with building the necessary skills to sing on pitch from the ground up. I found them very helpful and they improved my ability to stay on pitch tremendously.

I also agree with Gordon that you may want to see what a hearing specialist can do for you. Technology is great thing!

Best of luck to you and keep us posted on how things are coming along.

Take care,
Ty

+1 to Singing Success.

I did the SS program and now am doing Mastering Mix. I'm by no means a master vocalist, but I've gone from being called tone deaf to being able to do solo acoustic gigs confidently and getting a very good crowd reaction, all in 2 years time.

I will definitely need to take a look at the singing success program. It sounds like it is worth the money!

It is dude, and then some. Like I said, I'm not affiliated with them, just a loyal customer!

Hey Jon, what's your take on Mastering Mix? I've been contemplating getting it, but didn't know how much further is took things with regards to improving technique, etc.

As always, your thoughts are appreciated and highly valued.

Highly, highly, highly, highly reccomended!

I think I've made more progress with the Mastering Mix program than I did with the Singing Success program. I mean, if you are a total newb to singing then you really have to start with SS. But if you already have a foundation, MM will vastly improve your tone and your technique.

Singing Success all the way! I've only been through the first 3 cds, but my vocal range has already tripled. As soon as I finish the rest, I'm going for Mastering Mix!

Way to go Jake! I'm at the same point (CD 3-ish) in Mastering Mix and have seen great improvement.

Jon, I've always heard the skype lessons were great. Was the lesson basically like what they show on singingsuccessonline.com? Just curious.

Pretty much, as it was very diagnostic to my problems. Although, we did go off the beaten path from what Singing Success/Mastering Mix teaches to hit some of my specific problem areas. Chris has been studying recently with Melissa Cross (check out her DVD The Zen of Screaming) and he gave me some things that he picked up from her.

Very cool. I appreciate the feedback.

Melissa Cross is the best! I learned a ton from both her videos.

I love that she teaches screaming. NOBODY else does that!
