I have this peavey backsage 30 amp, and I dont know if its solid state or tube. Can anyone help me? Very new to this guitar stuff. Is there any obvious physical differences?

The tube amp has glass tubes which are very obvious.
They are also known as valves..
They have clear where you can see the filiments and rather easily accessable for replacement ..
You would most likely feel heat emitting from the amp if it were a tube amp..

The Peavey Backstage is call a transtube-emulating practice amp.
A tube amp is more delicate then a solid state amp.

The best info I could fine... Take note of the text overlay on the video.
good luck and keep pickin'

thanks for the help. My researching led me to more confusion, but I think this helps. I suppose I should have thought about the looking for tubes part though. :)

If it's an old school Peavey Backstage 30, it's a Solid State amp. I used to have one a good number of years ago. Good amp for practicing. Can get decent tone at modest volumes. Like any combo amp and particularly one of the old configuration, once you hit the upper volumes, it starts to strain. It was my second Amp I ever own and did me well for a few years.

Well, im not not sure how old it is but im going to go with its a solid state amp. This is my first amp, so as far as I can tell it sounds pretty good. Thanks!

I didn't look this up, but I am pretty sure it might be from around 1987. I have a similar but smaller (20w) Peavey Audition Plus that I bought then and never used personally until this past year. I am pretty certain the Backstage 30 was a model available at the time. These "transtube" amps have a bit if a rep for feedback once the dial starts getting past 12:00 or so, even on the clean channel. I know mine did, but otherwise is a tough little amp. They also have a reputation for being built like a tank.
...so ever since then, I always hang on to the buckle.
