The blues first. My opinion anyway. When I started playing, it was because I saw BB King on Austin City Limits on PBS and a midnight movie deal of The Song Remains the Same (Led Zep) and was dying to play. So when I started, I focused on bluesy stuff cuz that's what got me started. Never regretted it. It is, much like Neal said, the basis. Blues has the vocabulary that really fills in what Rock is.
