The way I heard the story, the guys from Lynyrd Skynyrd were pissed off at Neil Young's portrayal of southerners as racists in the song "Southern Man," so they stuck that line in "Sweet Home Alabama" as 'revenge.'

I don't think he was trying to say that all Southerners are racists, he was just pointing out the South's history of slavery (and conveniently ignoring the North's history of slavery by calling the song "Southern Man" ). I am a bit of a Neil Young fan, but "Southern Man" isn't one of his better songs, lyrically.
"It's all folk music... I ain't never heard no horse sing!"
- Attributed variously to Leadbelly and Louis Armstrong

If at first you don't succeed, you are obviously not Chuck Norris.
