Normally there are 5 springs... and 5 claws on the trem claw... and 5 holes on the trem block... I'm assuming that you only have 3 springs........ since you said that they're installed straight across and the trem is sticking up too far... you can do it a few different ways. Get 2 more trem springs and install them as well... this will give the most trem resistance... or use the 3 you have in a different pattern... like this...

Say these numbers represent the claws on the trem claw if your guitar is laying face down on your lap with the neck to the left...

And these represent the holes in the trem block...

Link the springs like this... Listing the trem block numbers first and the trem claw number second...

1 > 2
2
3 > 3
4
5 > 4

This will give you more resistance by putting more load on the springs... if this doesn't give you the necessary amount of load you'll need to buy 2 more springs... or screw the trem claw into the body some more to increase the distance from the block to the claw.
